One night while lounging around on the floor, staring at a World Atlas, Jessica and I (Troy) were making our way through the idea of driving from here in Falls Church, VA (just outside DC) to Managua, Nicaragua (Central America) on a kind of "Peace Corps-ish" journey of exploration, adventure, and education through experience. At the time the plan was simple and still in the developmental stages, in other words, a wishful thought just kicking around in our heads. After a moment of sitting on the floor half lost in the map (a favorite pastime of ours) the idea of driving from here to Nicaragua changed into something different; amazing what’s possible when you abandon the limits of reason. We decided in a moment since we were driving that far than we might as well hit Alaska while we were at it, right? We had both always wanted to go there. And then we figured well, if we are going to be driving all the way up (surely one would only do this MAYBE once in a lifetime) then why not just keep going all the way down to the tip of South America - when looking at an atlas of the Americas it was almost a natural progression. So this is how it all began, and while the immediate and instinctual response to something so foreign is fear, fear of failure, fear of danger, fear of insecurity, fear of discomfort; we quite simply decided to embrace the excitement and have started to plan our lives around the vision. After all, fear and excitement are the same emotion. |
